Abstract

The importance of the present study stems from the history of political marginalization of the Egyptian woman was subjected to. The Egyptian woman was barred from participation in public life, in all its levels, including decision making. Structural and cultural factors lead to social frames that restricted her roles away from politics. This might be due to the dominance of the male culture. It can be attributed also to the general policies of the ruling elites, which led to the restrictions of the democracy margin and exclusion of political parties. This leads to a social situation where coercive and discriminatory methods, based on sexual, class, religious factors, are installed. The main questions posed by the present study are: What are the characteristics of political participation among women in Upper Egypt? What are the obstacles facing her in her pursuit of political participation in all its levels and types?
A field study was carried out in Quena Governorate in Upper Egypt on a sample of working women, using social survey by sample methods. The results were analyzed in terms of the concepts and theories of the critical approach.
