Abstract

It is known that some Egyptian scholars who hold doctoral degrees from foreign universities have had their scientific theses translated into Arabic, either by themselves or by others.

Dr. Zaki Mubarak is among this last category with his thesis entitled (La Prose Arabe du IVe Siècle de l'Hégire) by which he obtained a doctorate degree from the University of Paris in 1931. His French thesis was published by the Oriental and American Library in Paris in the same year in which he obtained it. Then he himself translated it into Arabic publishing the Arabic version in Egypt through the Commercial Library in Cairo under the title (Artistic Prose in the Fourth Century) in 1934 AD.

This study compares the French original of that thesis and its Arabic edition. What we observe in this comparison is the large discrepancy between the number of pages in the original and in the Arabic version, the difference in the title between the two versions, and what the author added to the Arabic edition that was not present in the French original.
