An Ecological Approach to Arabic Narratology: Sawsan Gamil Hassan’s Novel Alnbāshwn (Trash Pickers) as a Model Adopting an ecological approach, ecocriticism is considered one of the modern trends that analyses narrative texts. Sawsan Gamil Hassan’s novel Alnbāshwn attempts to raise environmental awareness within the narrative text, at a time when ecological studies did not receive much attention in Arabic narratology. Ecocriticism is deemed a critical stance that places one foot in literature and the other on the ground. The novel is a wake-up call for halting destruction of the environment. It also calls for strengthening the relationship between the human being and the environment, for its protection and preservation. The novel focuses, in numerous parts, on the absence of environmental justice. Animals have become disturbed by human actions and exploitation. Environmental intertextuality is evident as the novel unfolds. The narration overflows with many scientific quotes. This shows that the writer possesses an extensive environmental knowledge which she receives inspiration from and utilizes for her environmental purposes. In most of its parts, the novel adopts the most popular environmental concepts, such as “Hyper objects”, a concept coined by Morton to grant privilege to specific creatures or species based on environmental considerations.
